Sioux Falls Stockyards Ends Cattle Sales
The Sioux Falls Stockyards were once the largest stockyard in the nation. After 92 years, the Sioux Falls Stockyards ended cattle sales on Thursday, June 25, 2009. The Stockyards have been offered for sale by the owner, Canal Capital, because it cannot comply with city restrictions on wastewater. Canal Capital is also trying to refinance debt, and pay delinquent county taxes.
The last cattle sale on June 25th was emotional for the many spectators, and Stockyards workers. Though cattle sales ended, smaller sales of hogs, sheep and goats will continue; but Central Livestock is no longer affiliated with the Sioux Falls Stockyards.
We thank the Sioux Falls staff for their many years of dedicated service. Several former employees will continue to order buy and place cattle for Central Livestock.
The purpose of Central Livestock Association is to assist livestock producers in production and marketing by providing competitive prices, superior service and broader outlets through a profitable and innovative organization. Central Livestock has four livestock auction markets, located in Rock Creek, Albany and Zumbrota, Minn., West Fargo, N.D.
